“Sucks you can’t see out of it”
And of course the only people complaining are the ones that don’t drive one, much less even been in one probably.
You never hear someone on the forum say “gosh, can’t see out of my car”
You know why? Because adjusting the seats and mirrors do wonders! The seats move up, omg! But let’s base everything on the opinion of someone who probably sat in one at the auto show.

Never owned a 5th gen, but have no issues seeing blind spots in the 6th. Plus it helps having those nannies that let you know if someone is next to you.

only...its still true. I only drove the old one a couple of times, so I can’t speak to the new one but it sucked...not matter where I put the seat/mirrors. Yes you can get used to it but you can get used to having only only 3 fingers on each hand too. People on forums don’t complain because people like the car enough to look past/ignore its faults. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it is slightly disingenuous.

I had one as a rental for a few days right when the fifth gen first came out.
The visibility sucks. It’s a fact.
Camaro owners who don’t complain about the visibility are not avoiding those complaints because they have developed the ability to see through metal. They’ve decided they like the other aspects of the car enough that they put up with or don’t care about the shit visibility.

I can’t see out of my car.
Top down is fine, but in an S2000 you are screwed if you need to look back past the doors with the top up for e.g. a V-shaped turn like this one near my house:
And forget backing out of parking spots. Totally blind.

I drove a 2012 Camaro SS, and it was because a friend of mine was afraid to back it out, because of the sight lines.... he let me take it around the block and you know what? The visibility isn’t that bad.
The shudder it made when shifting hard from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd however.... not befitting a car with 6k miles on it.

Its possible the 6th gen is better, but its also possible that either:
a. you have a unique kinesiology that allows you to be both comfortable AND have acceptable visibility (shared possibly only with the principle designer)
b. You just like the car enough to look past its glaring fault and accept it.
As a person who can’t stand poor visibility and that is reflected in my car purchases maybe its just something I notice more.

Any large coupe has piss poor sight lines in at least some directions. In the Mustang I have a huge hood I can see out the front, decent side visibility, but nothing out the rear quarters. I have blind spot monitoring though, which is handy.

I, unlike most of the people who claim you can’t see out of it, have ACTUALLY SAT IN ONE. I sat in the new Camaro in Philly. I could see out of it perfectly fine, even though I’m 6'8", or about a foot taller than most people. Now, I've never sat in a 5th gen, but I can, in fact, confirm that seeing out of the 6th generation Camaro is indeed possible.

To be fair to Sampsonite, that is no excuse for bad design traits. The Camaro could have easily been designed to have a larger greenhouse. In fact, a larger greenhouse would make it look more like the retro-futuristic pony car it’s supposed to be.

If I adjusted the seat high enough for a proper vantage point out the windows, my head would be 2 inches through the roof.
For reference, I drive an FR-S. The windows in the FR-S are too small. But they are still taller than the windows in the Camaro. Even though the Camaro is a significantly larger car.
Maybe Chevy thinks that esthetic aligns with the demographic, but I think it looks awful. The ratio of greenhouse to door slab is all wrong.

I’ve never been in one of those (or any Camaro whatsoever) and while I guess it’s not that bad compared to other new cars I also think that most new cars offer very poor visibility for the driver. Blame it on stricter safety standards that keep us safer in case of an accident (good) but hinder our perception while driving (bad).
Doorlines in new cars are waaaay up high compared to 90's and 00's cars’, that gets you taller cars in general, with wider pillars... which is where I think most of the problem is. New, broad A pillars that help the car withstand another car head-on make for very big obstructions while driving, mostly while getting around a corner or intersection, they generate these forward blindspots, which experienced driver won’t have much problem with but will be a problem for newer and/or distracted drivers.

Man, but I looked at rs when they first hit the market and no matter how hard I tried I literally couldn’t see shit out the rear that would have been helpful. And that quarter panel dead spot was killer.. But luckily unless some one was 6 inches from the car I could see them with mirrors and also it had a back up camera so yeah, who gives a fuck if you can’t see much out that window. you can see if other cars are back there when your driving.

I've tuned it out by now, since I've always have owned a Camaro at all times, these complaints have never really held any value. Though I will say the 5th gen took a little time getting used to over the 4th gen it replaced in my garage and my 68 though I will say the 5th gen isn't much worse than a first gen in the visibility department. They both have the same blind spots in the c pillar. The big difference is the A pillar between the two.

6'. The seat is all the way up in the FR-S, just giving me clearance to the roof. Still wish that the dash, window sill and trunk lid were a couple inches lower. And the rear seat ‘windows’ are pointless. B&C pillars are too thick.

I just think complaining is a moot point. It’s impossible to give a GT car the sight lines of a Camry. Can the Camaro’s be improved? Sure, I bet they could improve on them. But in the recent history of GT cars with fat quarters I’m pretty sure lack of outward vision has always been an issue.

Also, believe it or not, there are sight envelope requirements in FMVSS/ECE regs. It literally generates cones of visibility from the mirrors that can’t be violated, and studio has to honor that. Which is why all my designer friends cheered when the new Cadillac rearview camera/mirror thing got approved.

Mercedes Streeter

I actually kinda figured that, so that a manufacturer just can’t slap any sort of mirror on and call it a day.
What’s the Cadillac mirror thing? I heard about some cool concept that’s basically a rearview mirror that deletes the rear seats from what you see behind you.
yamahog
> Mercedes Streeter
03/09/2016 at 14:41 | 0 |
Right, I think there’s a minimum area for the mirror itself and then you have to model some type of human driver’s viewing angles of those mirrors, yadda yadda. The fun stuff!
And the XT5 review today talked about it a little, basically looks like you press a button and the mirror turns into a huge backup camera that shows a panorama of what’s behind you as if your car has no rear quarter panels.

I hear that a lot on the VW Scirocco.
Beautiful car, great legs with economical (1.4TSi) and/or powerful (2.0TSi) engines (by Euro scale not U.S. scale).
But what do some say about it? “you can’t see properly out of the rear window”.
Ye’, a five door VW Golf is practical, a three door VW Golf is still practical with some sportiness and the VW Scirocco is a sexy VW Golf (the way I see them).
Though I’d take mine like this if anyone wants to sub me GBP£33,000 (USD$47,000).

I own a 5th gen and with the mirrors set just past the view of the rear quarters I have never had to even wonder if someone was in my blind spot because I don’t have one.
It does have a blind spot while backing out of a space, but I’ve never had a close call or hit anything. I just back out slowly until I can make sure no one is back there.

The base model three door VW Golf S starts at £19,365 ($27,500) for the same engine.
